Large enough generator?

Our power went out due to wind damage from hurricane Ike, in Pennsylvania. We have not had power for 4 days now, but luckily I was able to get a generator and have saved our fridge and freezer. My question is what can I power with this generator. It is a 5000 watt generator, and I was told that this should be able to power the whole house. Only thing is, I have a lot to run in my house. We have well water, heat with an electric heat pump, which has electric back up heat, and also an electric hot water heater. The well pump has a double pole 20 amp breaker, hot water double pole 30 amp breaker, heat pump double pole 25 amp, and furnace double pole 60 amp and double pole 30 amp. Will the 5000 watt generator be able to power any one of these at a given time? I know I am SOL for using them all at once, but switching between them would not be a big deal to me. Also, I know that I should not back feed into my house, and plan on getting a manual transfer switch to do the job. I just need to know if I need to get a bigger generator before I start looking at transfer switches. Thanks for the help.

What can I plant in the Midwest this time of year?

I’m a little new to vegetable gardening – I’ve lived in apartments the past 10 years and haven’t had anywhere to plant one! I just moved into my first house (SOooo happy!), and I want to plant a big vegetable garden in my front yard (edible landscaping style).

Can I start anything now? I live in NE Kansas (which is on the edge of the eastern forested zone, for those who know about different climates). Right now it’s typical August weather – super hot and humid, lots of sun, very little rain. (We had a storm blow through (literally) last night – it lasted about 5 minutes and barely got the ground wet, but the wind managed to knock out power on the whole block and knock a tree branch down in my front yard!)

Also, I have 2 medium-sized tomato plants (about 1 1/2 feet tall) and a small pepper plant (about 3 inches tall) growing in pots. Should I put them in the ground, or leave them where they seem to be doing ok?

    Thanks for the advice!

Iren has came and left, I have a lingering question?

Irene came and our power is not out. The weather channal is saying that there are heavy rains and winds to follow, is it likely that our power will go out during the aftermath of Hurricane Irene?

          hELP WITH TURBINES?

          1. What might be a problem with assuming that speed equals power?

          2. How did the area of the blades correspond with the speed?

          3. Try to explain the difference by applying the principles of physics.

          4. Most commercial wind generators have two or three blade turbines. What is a possible explanation for this design?
WILL ANYONE ELSE ANSWER & ACTUALLY HELP ME????

Will my gas water heater still work if I don’t have electricity?

We live in Ohio where we had a severe wind storm yesterday. Our power was knocked out (along with 500,000 others) and they don’t expect to have it back on for another day or two.

We’re wondering if we can take all the hot showers we want before the electricity comes back on or if we’ll only have one tank full of hot water and then it’ll be empty?
It’s an older water heater in an older house with city water that (currently) has no use restrictions.

All comments about being blonde will receive a thumbs down. Gas appliances often use electricity to function. (duh)

How dangerous is a gas leak in a garage?

I heard it was going to rain this afternoon, and I had planned on mowing my lawn. I decided to mow the lawn really quickly before the storm hit, so I ran a power strip out my window and plugged my electric lawnmower in. I was moving rather quickly, and I forgot to disable my sprinkler system. About ten minutes ago, the sprinklers kicked in and my lawnmower shorted out. I went inside to shut the power off after smoke came out of the lawnmower, and when I went into my basement it started raining. I heard a loud noise, and when I went back outside, I found that the wind had blown the power strip into my neighbor’s garage. I think the power strip damaged their gas heater, because I smelled gas when I went to pick it up.

I don’t like my neighbor very much, since he yells at me for doing things like this. Should I just pretend like this didn’t happen, or is it my responsibility to blame it on somebody else for the safety of his family?

Off-grid (or nearly so) living in Colorado?

I’ve been doing a little research on low carbon footprint homes in Colorado. I have looked into yurts (gers) but I would really like solid walls around me and possibly a basement. I am interested in geothermal, wind, and solar power. I would love to get some ideas and possibly a general cost to begin saving to pay 100% down. Sounds lofty and a little crazy — but I would really like to have a paid home that is at least partially self-sustaining. Contemporary lines would be a major plus and would definitely need to co-exist in a neighborhood with more traditional homes. Modular is fine and would prefer to purchase new rather than renovate an existing place.

So, do you know of anything like this? Could you pass information my way? Thanks!!
