Will my gas water heater still work if I don’t have electricity?
We live in Ohio where we had a severe wind storm yesterday. Our power was knocked out (along with 500,000 others) and they don’t expect to have it back on for another day or two.
We’re wondering if we can take all the hot showers we want before the electricity comes back on or if we’ll only have one tank full of hot water and then it’ll be empty?
It’s an older water heater in an older house with city water that (currently) has no use restrictions.
All comments about being blonde will receive a thumbs down. Gas appliances often use electricity to function. (duh)

how do i connect a small home windmill to the grid, or at least my home?
I’m not looking to pump tons of power back into the ‘grid’ but rather supplement some of the power I am taking from it. If I were to produce, say, 20% of my power intake from a small windmill, how do I utilize that electricity in my home?
Windmills produce power in DC, so I know it needs to go through some sort of inverter to become the right sort of AC to feed the house, but also don’t know how you would prevent high voltage from traveling in reverse, making the windmill go haywire. I’ve seen people store wind power in batteries, but that seems like a needless step if I just wish to use the power to run my clothes dryer or AC.

Make electricity with steam at home?
This is probably a silly idea but I really like the idea of making my own electricity. I’ve thought about solar and wind but neither would really work for me. My wife & I will be building a new home in 9-10 years and I have a new idea…. We want to have one of those outdoor wood burning furnaces to heat the house. Is there such a thing as a small steam powered electric generator? If there is, maybe I could use some of the heat generated in the furnace to boil water, make steam and turn a small turbine to generate electricity. This way, I could heat my home in the winter and make my own electricity all year long just with wood. Just an idea (maybe a stupid one). If anyone has any info on this subject please share it with me. Thanx.

building a big creek and using it for water power?
Hi I am just asking how much you think building a big creek on a 100 acre lot of land would be to build for a water turbine to make electricity, I wanna build a creek for hydropower generation, put solar panels to make power for water heating, have a well to save on taxes, use geothermal energy for heating and cooling the house, and wood fireplace for redundancy in the winter, 1 20 kilowatt wind turbine and a loremo car that uses 170 MPG of gasoline… how much do u think all that would cost? wanna make a wind, water, and solar system.

Small homebuilt wind turbine/generator questions?
My area has an average of 10.5 MPH wind yearly
Setup: Maybe an Ametek PM 30V DC generator with inverter, battery(ies) and homebuilt or purchased blades/hub, etc. nothing too fancy
Purpose: To be able to power light or small evaporative cooler if electricity goes out (and to learn/have fun)
Questions: 1) Is this setup able to power the above 2) when not used for emergency, will the inverters that plug in the wall actually make any difference in electric bill?
Thanks

Home cooling ideas?
First Idea:
Whole house fans – blow air into the attic to keep the house cool but run on electricity. My idea is to run a whole house fan with a wind powered turbine on the roof.
Second idea:
Ceiling fans – blow air up to the ceiling to pull heat upward. What if ceiling fans could pull that heat out of the house completely. Maybe have vents mounted in the ceiling to allow it to escape. These vents could be closed if you wanted to blow air downward.
